About Coach 5
Coach 5 is one of the last surviving pieces of passenger equipment from the Ohio River & Western Railroad. Known as the “President’s Car,” it served company officials and special guests during the railroad’s final decades.
Historical Significance
Built in the late 1800s, Coach 5 represents the OR&W’s commitment to passenger service across southeastern Ohio. Its unique narrow‑gauge design, interior layout, and long service life make it an irreplaceable artifact of regional railroad history.
Current Preservation Work
The Friends of the OR&W are working to stabilize the car’s structure, protect it from further deterioration, and document its original features. This includes:
- Stabilizing the underframe and body structure
- Securing loose siding and roof components
- Documenting interior features and surviving hardware
- Preparing the car for long‑term restoration planning
