Caboose 33
Caboose 33 sits down at the Thorla-McKee Well Park in Noble County, just outside of Caldwell.
After railroad days, it spent time as a gas station and a shed/work shop before eventually being donated to the Noble County Historical Society. The Noble County Historical Society has done a great job at maintaining the caboose. The Friends of the Ohio River & Western has a few projects planned to help the Historical Society continue their efforts and also to improve the display at the Thorla-McKee Well park.
The caboose sits on the actual right of way that the OR&W took to Caldwell. When visiting the park, you can see the ground is built up under the caboose and continues either direction. Also at the park is a replica sheltershed typical of what would have been along the OR&W. The shelter shed at the park is a replica of the Brister Shelter Shed.
We are in the planning stages of redefing the Right of Way which includes replacing the railroad ties and gravel beneath of the caboose with the intention of putting narrow gauge railroad trucks underneath of the car. The replica Brister Shelter Shed was painted and signs added by the Friends of the OR&W in June/July 2024.
The Friends of the OR&W are in the news! We would like to the The Journal for running the story of us adding the caboose letter board. Railroad cars would have had the railroad's name on the car somewhere. We wanted to recreate the letter board for the caboose to proudly display the name of the railroad it served.
